Manchester JUNIOR CUP

1890-91 : Hurst Ramblers

• With only 9 of the 21 clubs from 1889-90 now entering the next season, we had an additional 11 teams join to make 20 teams in the 1890-91 competition.
• 2 of the new teams (Newton Heath Swifts and Newton St Mark's) were actually rejoining, having not entered in 1889/90. However Newton Heath Swifts withdrew just before their 1st Round tie
• Stockport County Reserves were a renaming of Heaton Norris Rovers who had entered their first team in the 1888/89 season
• 4 of the clubs were Reserve sides: Ardwick Reserves, Newton Heath Swifts, Stockport County Reserves and West Manchester Swifts.
• Some clubs were given a bye through to the Quarter Final stage, which was now considered the 1st Round proper, with the lower ranked clubs playing in the qualifying stages.
• The cup was dominated again by the Ashton-u-Lyne clubs, but with new club Middleton challenging them all the way, eventually losing to Hurst Ramblers in a very controversial Final

HT 0-1. "an enormous crowd of people".
Middleton lodged a protest due to ineligible players and breach of the rules of professionalism
(one of the team had reportedly received money before being properly registered and without giving a receipt

for it, and another of the team had taken part in a contest for money).
Middleton also accused Hurst Ramblers of Middleton's keeper being blatently injured by a Hurst Ramblers player,
Another Middleton player was told during the game by a Hurst Ramblers player (incorrectly and maliciously)

that his brother had died.
Protest was rejected and Hurst were presented with the cup on 15 April.
The Stalybridge Reporter confirming "it was fairly and squarely won"

1891-92 : Middleton

• With 12 of the 20 clubs from 1890-91 now entering the next season, though one was the result of the merger of West Manchester Swifts and Manchester St Bride's, we had 11 new teams join and 4 re-join to make 28 teams in the 1891-92 competition.
• The 4 teams re-joining were Hulme and Royton Reserves (last played 1888/89), with Taunton and Stalybridge Rovers who had both missed the the previous season
• South West Manchester were a re-naming of Medlock Central.
• Eight clubs were given a bye through to the 2nd Round, while the 4 "biggest" clubs didn't play until the Quarter Final stage, (also considered the 1st Round proper)
• The cup was won for the first time by a non-Tameside club. The final was a repeat of the previous season, with Middleton this time coming out on top. The all-Middleton semi was epic, going to 3 games, with the two replays played at Rhodes rugby union ground.

1892-93 : Middleton

• With 15 of the 28 clubs from 1891-92 re-entering for the 1892/93 season, we had 11 new teams join and 2 re-join to retain 28 teams in the competition.
• The 2 teams re-joining were Hollinwood (last played 1890/81), and Manchester St Mary's (last played 1889/90 season)
• All five of the Reserve clubs left so this was presumably a decision made by the Manchester FA.
• Another rule change was related to the way the draw works. Now it was split into North and South groups through to the Quarter Final stage. The 4th Round was simply 2 ties - basically a North Qualifying game and a South Qualifying game, with the winners through to meet the 6 "selected" clubs. They were selected based in theory on last season's good performances, though it is not clear why Hooley Hill were given the bye.
• Some of the groupings were not logical, with South West Manchester and Stretford in the North group, and Hollinwood in the Southern group
• Ten clubs were given a bye through to the 2nd Round, with the 6 selected clubs not entering until the Quarter Final stage, (also considered the 1st Round proper)
• The Manchester FA was busy with multiple protests, with many games being overturned for various reasons. One Quarter Final didn't happen due to Newton St Mark's, who had been semi-finalists in all their previous seasons in the Cup, they scratched the game and so Ashton Town received a walkover to the Semi-Final. Newton St Mark's were suspended in March 1893 for not compensating Ashton Town for their loss due to the scratch, and were then confirmed to have folded
• The cup was retained by a club for the first time, with Middleton again taking the title and keeping the Cup away from the very strong Tameside clubs. Ashton Town made the final in their only independent season before they merged with local rivals Ashton North End.

1893-94 : Hurst Ramblers

• With 15 of the 28 clubs from 1892-93 re-entering for the new season, we had 12 new teams join and 1 re-join to maintain 28 teams in the competition.
• The team returning was Stalybridge Rovers who played previously in 1891/92 season.
• The format introduced last season was retained, with the North and South champions meeting the 6 selected clubs in the Quarter Final.
• Again ten clubs were given a bye through to the 2nd Round, with the 6 selected clubs not entering until the Quarter Final stage, (also considered the 1st Round proper).
• It was much quieter for protests with no matches voided. One team was disqualified, which was Didsbury after their win over Stretford started with them only having with 7 men. It is not clear why they were disqualified, but it may have been the introduction of the extra players after the game started as Stretford reported them for a breach of rules. Interestingly though, Stretford were not reinstated, and it was the next match that saw Burnage awarded a walkover with their game with Didsbury cancelled.
• The cup was won for the 2nd time by Hurst Ramblers, who defeated Tonge in the Final

1894-95 : Middleton

• With 14 of the 28 clubs from 1893-94 re-entering for the new season, we had 8 new teams join and 1 re-join. This meant that only 23 teams entered.
• The team returning was W Berry's Employes who played previously in 1892/93 season.
• The current format was retained, with the North and South champions meeting the 6 selected clubs in the Quarter Final. The North/South split seemed a bit more logical this time with the introduction of more North Manchester clubs to balance it better.
• With 5 less teams that before, this meant that there was only 1 tie in the 1st Round. This caused confusion for at least one team, Glossop North End, who believed their 2nd Round 5-0 win against Hooley Hill was actually in the 1st Round, meaning they accidentally fielded 3 ineligible players, forcing the game to be void. Luckily for them they won the re-played tie 6-2
• So 15 clubs were given a bye through to the 2nd Round, with 6 more "selected" clubs not entering until the Quarter Final stage, (also considered the 1st Round proper).
• It was clear that this format was not favourable to many clubs with much smaller clubs playing off to meet the bigger clubs, and the bigger clubs only playing a couple of games to get into the Final. Bigger changes took place after the season, effectively banning the bigger sides from entering
• There was an odd situation in the Hurst Nook Rovers v Stalybridge Rovers game. It was reported that Hurst Nook Rovers knew that Stalybridge Rovers had 2 men ineligible for their first game (ie the Quarter Final) so they decided to withdraw and allowed Stalybridge Rovers to have a walkover. They then had a 2x30min Friendly game (or "Ordinary" as they called it then) including the 2 men that had been ineligible, and Stalybridge Rovers won 5-0 in front of an 800 crowd. This seems very honourable by Hurst Nook Rovers and it is suspected that they had a weakened side and so found a positive way to bow out instead of the cup defeat.
• The cup was won for the 3rd time in 4 years by Middleton, who defeated W Berry's Employes in the Final 2-0. The Tameside and Middleton domination of the latter stages of the Cup in recent years (though Berry's were an exception from the Harpurhey area), including this 3rd win in 4 years for Middleton, was another reason why the Manchester FA changed the participation rules again, having previously banned Reserve sides of Senior clubs.

OUTGOING
• Ashton North End - excluded from Junior Cup and assigned to Senior Cup
• Beswick - believed to have folded
• Crabtree's Employes - believed to have folded
• Glossop North End - excluded from Junior Cup and assigned to Senior Cup
• Higher Crumpsall - missed the following season but returned for 1896/97
• Hurst Nook Rovers - did not enter again
• Hurst Ramblers - excluded from Junior Cup and assigned to Senior Cup, but returned in 1897/98 season

• Stalybridge Rovers - excluded from Junior Cup and assigned to Senior Cup
• Tonge - excluded from Junior Cup and assigned to Senior Cup but returned after one season in 1896/97
• West Royton - did not enter again

• West Salford - did not enter again

1895-96 : Hadfield

• This was the start of a new era as 6 of the best teams had been moved off to the Manchester Senior Cup. With 13 of the 23 clubs from 1894-95 in total leaving, just 10 re-entered for the new season.
• The changes did though attract a number of new teams, 9 in total, as well as 8 more teams returning after previously leaving. This brought the total up to 27 teams.
• The teams returning were Compstall, Denton Wanderers, Harpurhey, Hulme, Manchester St Mary's, Marple, Reddish (who had last played just the one game in 1888/89) and Failsworth (who had also played just one game, back in the first ever season 1887/88).
• With the more Senior clubs now having departed, just 2 clubs were chosen as "Selected Clubs" and given a bye to the latter stages - W Berry's Employes, who had reached last season's Final, and Denton Lads' Club, who had battled through to the Quarter Finals last season.
• The North/South draw split was no longer referred to regionally, but just called Division 1 and Division 2, like the FA Cup was at that stage, but apart from setting the route to the latter stages, it didn't serve any practical purpose and was not reported on, except for in the draw itself.
• Like last season, there was only 1 tie in the 1st Round, which meant everyone else got a bye to the 2nd Round (or later for the "Selected Clubs")
• So 23 clubs were given a bye through to the 2nd Round, with the Selected clubs not entering until the Quarter Final stage, (also considered the 1st Round proper).
• With the departure of most of the Tameside and Middleton clubs, newspaper coverage was much less than previously, and so a couple of results are still not yet discovered.
• The cup was won for the first time by one of the clubs joining for the first time, Hadfield, just on the "12 miles from Manchester" limit, and this was their only win. Beaten 1-0 were Berry's Employes, who were losing finalist for two seasons in a row.

• Manchester St Mary's - returning from two seasons away for their 3rd spell

LEAGUES
By now, most clubs now played in a league as well as the local Cups. Of the 27 teams entering this season, only 2 I am unsure of which (if any) league they were in - Gorton Albion and Gorton Ramblers. The rest played as follows:

• Manchester League (11) - Manchester Talbot; Rusholme; Stretford; Hulme; Molyneux; Broadheath; Harpurhey; Reddish; Levenshulme; Manchester St Mary's; Ladybarn Lads' Club

1896-97 : Freetown

• After the big changes last season, there were a lots of departures. With 16 of the 27 clubs from 1895-96 in total leaving, just 11 re-entered for the new season.
• There were still a number of new teams, 11 in total, as well as 4 more teams returning after previously leaving. This brought the total to 25 teams.
• The teams returning were New Mills, Longsight, Higher Crumpsall and Tonge. Tonge were one of the teams last season moved to the Senior Cup, but they reduced their squad to field only amateur players and so were returned to the Junior Cup.
• Tonge's first game back saw a visit to Heaton Park Albion and one of their players was suspended for a month for fighting with an opposition player.
• The reduction of clubs saw a more streamlined format, with the six 2nd Round winners now in the Quarter Final with the "Selected Clubs".
• The previous finalists Hadfield and W Berry's Employes were given the bye to the Quarter Final. Everyone else now played in the 1st Round, except just one bye to the 2nd Round which was Heywood Rovers.
• Newspaper coverage was again considerably poorer than previously, and so a number of the 1st Round results are still not yet discovered.
• The cup was again won for the first time by one of the clubs joining for the first time, Freetown, who beat Broadheath 2-0.

Original result not known, but Newton Heath Athletic assumed to have won
Freetown ptotested and the match was voided. The date is assumed to be 7 Nov.
It is unclear if this 7 Nov match definitely took place.
The Freetown protest could have been against the orginal 2-2 draw match
but that seems unlikely as it was upheld and game was scheduled to be re-played at Freetown.
That is no reward if it was a 2-2 result they were protesting about, as it would have been anyway.
So it is believed that a replay took place that Freetown lost

and the a protest caused the re-play of the replay.

Sat 12 Dec 1896   Freetown  5-2  Newton Heath Athletic  unknown unknown unknown

Original tie was void due to a Freetown protest

and was ordered to be re-played on or before 26 Dec

1897-98 : Hurst Ramblers

• There were less departures this time round with just 8 of the 25 clubs from 1896-97 in leaving. So 17 re-entered for the new season.
• There were still a number of new teams, 9 in total, with 1 additional team returning after previously leaving. This brought the total back to 27 teams, as there had previously been the season before last.
• The team that returned was Hurst Ramblers - former winners in both 1890/91 and 1893/94. They were one of the teams in 1895 that moved to the Senior Cup, but their reduced status in the Ashton & District Charity League meant that they were returned to the Junior Cup.
• The more streamlined format of last season was reversed as we returned to having just one 1st round tie. All the rest of the clubs joined in the 2nd Round, except the two "Selected Clubs" who joined later.
• The previous season winners Freetown were one of the selected clubs, as was the returning Hurst Ramblers. Why Finalists Broadheath were not selected is unclear - indeed Broadheath actually had to play in the only 1st Round tie.
• Newspaper coverage of the early stages was not good, and so a number of the 2nd Round results and home venues are still not yet confirmed.
• The cup was won by the returning Hurst Ramblers, after being given a bye to the Quarter Final. They beat Manchester Talbot 4-1 in front of a good 6000 crowd at Newton Heath's Bank Lane ground.

1898-99 : Berry's Association

• There was a big increase in clubs this season - from 27 up to 46.  With 11 clubs leaving, that meant a whole 26 new clubs - plus 4 more that returned after a time away
• The four returning teams were North East Manchester (7 seasons away), South West Manchester (5 seasons away), Didsbury (4 seasons away) and Marple (two seasons)
• Despite the big increase in new clubs, still many had byes to the 2nd Round - 22 clubs in all.  In addition 4 more "selected clubs" had a bye to the Quarter Final stage
• The previous season winners Hurst Ramblers were one of the selected clubs, now playing in the Lancashire Combination.  Berry's Association were also in the Lancashire Comnbination, and they showed their class with a big win in the Final against former winners Freetown
• The changes made a few seasons earlier, effectively moving the better Junior clubs to the Manchester Senior Cup, had come full circle now with the strong Manchester League providing 12 of their 13 clubs - only Prestwich didn't enter

1899-1900 : Newton Heath Athletic

• There was another big turnover of clubs this season, though overall there was a reduction from 46 to 40.  With 25 clubs leaving, that meant 18 new clubs - and all of them were brand new to the competition
• However these numbers are subject to change as a full list of 1st and 2nd Preliminary Round ties have not been uncovered - indeed there couid be more teams and games added.  I have already had 2 games initially included, that I now believe were listed in the Cup results in error - Seedley Athletic 5-2 Milford (at New Barns) and Marple 3-1 Bollington Cross (at Wearside).  There is no other record of any of those clubs in other rounds, and if they did play, there are not enough slots in the later rounds to fit them in.  Plus Bollington was outside the Manchester Junior Cup 12 mile radius to be able to qualify

• There was a strange situation where (it appears) that Broadheath Reserves of the Manchester Combination entered, as well as their 1st team who had a bye to the later rounds.  While 1st Teams and Reserves had entered in different seasons before, this was the first example of both playing in the same season's competition.  They were also the first Reserve side in the competition since they all left in 1892

• This was the season that I have offically noted the format of the cup to incorporate a Preliminary section and a Qualifying section.  Previously it was very vague, but seems to be clearly indicated this season that the early 3 rounds were "Preliminary competition", followed by a with a 1st and 2nd Qualifying Rounds, followed by the 1st Round "proper", which was technically the Quarter Finals.  As previously, the Quarter Finals ie "1st Round Proper" was when the "selected clubs" entered.  This time, there was also a big batch of clubs given a bye to the 1st Qualifying Round ie to bypass the Preliminary rounds - mainly Manchester League clubs
• So at present, it appears that 16 clubs started in the 1st Preliminary Round, 8 more in the 2nd Preliminary Round (though the club that lost to Walshaw is a mystery at present), 12 more into the 1st Qualifying Round and then 4 more into the Quarter Finals
• The previous season winners Berry's Association were one of the selected clubs, thrashing Marple Brabyns in the Quarter Final but being soundly beaten by Newton Heath Athletic in the Semis

• Freetown had received a bye in the Semis due to Hurst Ramblers folding, having beaten Urmston 3-0 in the Quarter Final. However, they were beaten heavily in the Final by Newton Heath Athletic, who claimed their first Junior Cup win
• The Cup was now clearly at 2 levels with the lower amateur clubs with little chance of reaching the latter stages, never mind winning the competition, and reaching the 1st Round proper for them was clearly an achievement

It is believed that Walshaw were in the 2nd Preliminary Round, rather than having a bye to the 3rd Preliminary Round, but there is no record of who they did or were meant to play.  It is probable that the team they were due to play was another team given a bye to the 2nd Preliminary Round, as all 1st Preliminary Round winners are accounted for, and no trace of either the 1st or 2nd Preliminary draw or Fixture lists can be found. So it is likley that Walshaw received a Walkover.

In addition, 2 other games played on Sat 28 Oct were (presumably incorrectly), attributed to the 2nd Preliminary Round.  They were Seedley Athletic 5-2 Milford (at New Barns, Salford) and Marple 3-1 Bollington Cross (at Wearside, Compstall).  No other evidence of these teams being in the cup that season has been traced. It is extremely unlikley that Bollington Cross from near Macclesfield would qualify for the Cup, due to being, as the crow flies, 14 miles away from Manchester centre, 2 miles more than the maxiumum allowed.  The confusion could have come from the previous season's 2nd Round when both Marple and Seedley (though not Athletic) were present.  The games in question were probably friendlies, as there is no evidence of Marple or Seedley Atlhetic in the 3rd Preliminary Round - all 4 ties are known.
