Manchester Amateur League

Club Details

• This is the basic history of every team related to the Manchester Amateur League, as I add them to the records.
• All info is believed accurate but if you can correct any errors then please let me know.
• It is possible that teams that I have noted as playing in local friendlies were instead playing in an obscure league with limited to no coverage, though they were definitely involved in friendlies at some point throughout the season.
• Similarly for new clubs, sometimes it can only be assumed they were newly formed as there were no references seen previously, but they could maybe have been playing in friendlies or in an obscure league with limited to no coverage.
• Sometimes clubs changed names when joining leagues, or the league would sometimes report them as a shortened name, making it hard to identify if they are a continuation of a previous similarly-named club, or a replacement, or indeed the 1st team with reserves playing still in the original league. Until conclusive evidence turns up, I have to use best guess logic in some cases.
• For formation and folded dates, I have used either direct reported evidence or best guess using logic from the available results and reports in some cases.
• Information marked in purple is regarding the reserve sides of the club that is also in the league

Notes

 * Barrowfields were based in the Boarshaw area of Middleton, and changed their name in July 1914 to Middleton, whilst in the South East Lancashire League. They then continued until the SELL temporarily closed for WW1 in January 1916. After the war ended, an un-related Middleton team played in the Manchester League
 * Birch St Agnes later joined the new Manchester Amateur Alliance in 1911. Between leaving the Manchester Amateur League and 1911, they were playing friendlies, mainly against other church sides. Before joining the MAL, they tended to be referred to as just St Agnes but with Birch in brackets to avoid confusion with the Levenshulme version of St Agnes
 * Broughton joined the Lancashire Amateur League a year after leaving the Manchester Amateur League ready for the start of 1907-08
 * Cavendish were one of a number of teams that joined the league from the Manchester Sunday School League. In the MSSL they were generally referred to as Cavendish Sunday School, or Cavendish SS for short, but seem to have dropped the suffix when joining the MAL. They were based in the Chorlton-on-Medlock area of Manchester
 * Cheetham Hill Congregational Pleasant Sunday Afternoon were often shortened to Cheetham Hill Congregational or sometimes Cheetham Hill PSA. However they made things simpler in 1910 by changing their name to simply Cheetham
 * Chorlton Amateurs appeared to fold in 1910 but after the 1st World War in 1920 they re-formed and joined the Lancashire & Cheshire League for one season, winning the league and cup double
 * Crumpsall appear to have been formed in 1907 as CWS Crumpsall, changing their name to just Crumpsall when they joined the MAL. They later changed their name again to Middleton Amateurs in 1914, whilst in the South East Lancashire League, at the same time as Barrowfields changing their name to Middleton. In the late 1970s they dropped Amateurs and became Middleton. However they are not related to the Middleton Amateurs that played in the MAL, as this club folded in 1914, just before Crumpsall changed their name
 * Denton Corinthians went on to apply for the Lancashire Amateur League in 1907 at the same time as Broughton, but they were unsuccessful. Two years later they instead joined the Lancashire & Cheshire League and played in their inaugural season
 * Fallowfield played in the Manchester League 1893 to 1899 and then were seemingly dormant until starting the 1904-05 season. It is possible that they folded in 1899 and that this is a new club formed for the Manchester Amateur League that then folded mid-season at the start of March 1905, as confirmed by local reports. However, another club was formed 5 years later and also played in the Manchester Amateur League before again folding just 3 games before the end of their first season
 * Gorton Congregational originally formed in 1901 and went on to play in the Senior Division of the Sale and District League. However when the league folded just after the start of the 1906-07 season, the team did not survive more than a few weeks later and folded in late 1906. They then re-formed in 1907 in time to join the Manchester Central League 1907-08 season before joining the Manchester Amateur League a year later
 * Heaton Park moved their Reserve side out of the MAL for season 1906-07 and played two Reserve sides - one in the Heaton Park and District League and another in the Middleton Junction & District League. It is not clear if one was a 3rd team or both considered Reserves
 * Levenshulme did leave to join the Lancashire & Cheshire League in 1914 but the 14-15 season was not started due to the outbreak of war. Although the league restarted in 1919, Levenshulme didn't restart until the next season, where they played in Div 1 and their reserves in Div A before folding. There was an earlier club formed in 1885 that played until folding in January 1903. The new club was formed into the Manchester Amateur League in 1906
 * Manchester Athletics Club were commonly shortened to MAC in tables and results lists. They were a football team based on the ongoing Athletics club in Fallowfield. As well as Athletics, there was a cycling club there and other sports played. It is believed the football team was only active for the 1909-10 season
 * Manchester Nomads were a multi-sport club, first playing rugby union, and cricket, before the football arm began. After leaving the league, they played mainly away friendlies until 1909. The club continued with the bowling team until 1915
 * Manchester Social definitely folded just before the start of the 1906-07 season "due to insufficient support", but they reformed a number of times over the coming years. In 1914 they were in the South Manchester and District League and appeared in other leagues at various other times
 * Manchester South End folded in 1914, but not before winning the Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1911-12. The name later re-appeared in the Lancashire Amateur League when Old Hulmeians changed their name to Manchester South End in 1932
 * Manchester Zion seems to be quite complicated. They played in the league until 1916, while initially retaining a side in the Manchester Sunday School League. This side then joined the Lancashire & Cheshire League, playing as Zion Amateurs. The Zion Amateurs then played the 1919-20 season in the Lancashire & Cheshire League, though most newspapers were referring to them as Manchester Zion, given the MAL side were not playing elsewhere after the war. It appears that this version of the team also folded after that one post-war season
 * Mawdsley were sometimes referred to as Bolton Mawdsley
 * Middleton Amateurs folded after the 1913-14 season but their name lived on as Crumpsall, then in the Sout East Lancashire League, changed their name to Middleton Amateurs in the post-season
 * Monton Amateurs didn't play in the 1904-05 season, or possibly played friendlies only.  After leaving the MAL in 1908, they joined the South Manchester and District League before moving on to the Lancashire Amateur League Manchester Section for the 1909-10 season, and then folding in 1910. They are not related to the later Monton Amateurs that played in the Lancashire and Cheshire League, and are currently renamed as AFC Monton, most recently playing in the Manchester League
 * Mosley may have come from the Manchester Sunday School League side but it is not clear if this is definitely the case. They did retain a side in the MSSL, which would have presumably have then been their reserves as they didn't field a reserve side in the Manchester Amateur League
 * Old Collegians moved into Eccles's Stott Lane ground following the closure of the Eccles club in mid-1906. Old Collegians themselves folded on 19 November 1906. They folded while in 4th place in the league blaming "lack of support and injuries to players.
 * South Manchester Amateurs are not related to the later South Manchester Amateurs club, which was Whalley Range St Margaret's changing their name in 1914
 * Stanley Athletic were based in Longsight. Another Stanley Athletic were playing in the South Manchester and District League in the 1908-09 season and it is unclear if this was a revival of the 1902 club, or unrelated, or possibly the original club did not fold and played friendlies and/or played in an obscure league in the meantime
 * Stretford CS Old Boys are only referred to as Stretford CSOB but Catholic School Old Boys is the most logical name, as the Catholic School was opened around this time, though this is not confirmed. However at the end of their first season, they changed their name to Stretford Amateurs
 * Timperley YMCI changed their name to Timperley after their third season of the Manchester Amateur League, dropping the reference to the Young Men's Christian Institute. They resigned from the Manchester Amateur League very late in the 1910-11 season, in April 1911, but didn't fold, joining the Manchester Southern League the following season

 * Urmston are not related to the earlier Urmston club from 1880 that absorbed Flixton in 1881
 * West Gorton Baptists were often referred to as just West Gorton and were earlier in the Manchester Sunday School and Lads League before playing just friendlies (or possbly an obscure other league) and then joining the MAL in 1906. They were seen in the Longsight & District League as early as 1898. Unlike most other church sides in the MAL, they didn't play in the Manchester Sunday School League, but having played for a rival league earlier, later joined another alternative league, the Manchester Sunday School Union
 * Whalley Range Presbyterian later joined the new Manchester Amateur Alliance in 1911. Between leaving the Manchester Amateur League and 1911, they were playing friendlies, mainly against other church sides
 * Wilmslow were originally due to play in the first MAL season but withdrew before the season started. They finally appeared at the start of 1905-06 but withdrew again mid-season in early 1906. They continued to play friendlies and county cup ties until 1909
 * Withington Athletic were called Withington Primitive Methodists Athletic whilst in the Manchester Sunday School League, shortening their name when they joined the MAL
