North West Non League

Manchester League

Club Details

• This is the basic history of every team related to the 1890 edition of the Manchester League.
• All info is believed accurate but if you can correct any errors then please let me know.
• It is possible that teams that I have noted as playing in local friendlies were instead playing in an obscure league with limited to no coverage, though they were definitely involved in friendlies at some point throughout the season.
• Similarly for new clubs, sometimes it can only be assumed they were newly formed as there were no references seen previously, but they could maybe have been playing in friendlies or in an obscure league with limited to no coverage.
• For formation and folded dates, I have used either direct reported evidence or best guess using logic from the available results and reports in some cases.

• A number of clubs were announced as joining the league in 1890 but withdrew before the season started - Heaton Park, Manchester Amateurs (the reserves of the footballing side of Manchester rugby team), Worsley and although also Manchester St Mary's withdrew, they returned for Season 2

Notes

 * Dalton Hall was one of the halls linked to Owens College.  A previous version of the club, referred to as Dalton Hall (Owens College) had merged with the Manchester Association club in 1885

 * Lancashire Independent College was based in Whalley Range, next to Manley Park, where the British Muslim Heritage Centre is now, and the name Independent College was used on the OS maps. Both Lancashire College and Independent College are used interchangably for the team. Their ground was described as in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, but the boundary between Chorlton and Whalley Range was vague, so they may have played at the nearby "Cricket and Football ground" at what is now St Margaret's C of E Primary school

 * Manchester St Bride's was the neighbouring team to senior side West Manchester at Brooks's Bar.  They incorporated St Bride's unoffically at first, but then offically for the 1891/92 season, and they played as the senior team's reserves, called West Manchester St Bride's. However despite West Manchester annoucing they were using St Bride's in the 1892/93 Lancashire Junior League as their Reserves, the old name Manchester St Bride's started being used seperately. However they folded in 1893.

 * Middleton had just split from their one season association with Middleton Cricket Club and back as an independent club, they joined the Manchester League.  Having reached the final of the Manchester Junior Cup in 1890, they won it in 1891

 * Rochdale Clifford are one of the, if not the, oldest association football club in Rochdale by a number of years. They continued on until 1912

 * Stockport changed their name from Stockport St Thomas's in 1890, and later merged with the local cricket club Cheshire County & Stockport CC in 1891. Having merged, they did not continue in the Manchester League

 * Whalley Range are not related to the current club, that was formed in 1900
