North West Non League

Manchester JUNIOR CUP

1887-88 : Hurst Nook Rovers

• 1887-88 was the opening season of the new Cup competition, the year before leagues started being created to give clubs further competitive matches.
• The Manchester Junior Cup was started in 1887 as the Manchester (Football) Association's competition for local Junior clubs that due to their status did not qualify to play in the Manchester and District Challenge Cup (later called the Manchester Senior Cup), which had launched two seasons earlier in 1885.
• Sometimes Senior clubs would play their Reserve side in the Manchester Junior Cup, as they did with the local Junior (ie Amateur) leagues. Also some Junior clubs would play their 1st team in the equivalent Lancashire FA competition, the Lancashire Junior Cup, so fielding their Reserves, sometimes on the same day, in the Manchester Junior Cup.
• The newspaper coverage was quite patchy in the opening season, and it improved once the papers worked out how best to report on these new competions, as originally there was still some confusion between the cups and also the type of football being played (rugby or association).

1888-89 : Ashton North End

• With 9 of the 18 clubs from 1887-88 now entering the next season, we had an additional 18 teams join to make 27 teams in the 1888-89 competition.

• Four of the new clubs had links to modern day sides. Heaton Norris Rovers became Stockport County in 1890; Hurst Reserves were the club that nearly 60 years later would become Ashton United; Newton Heath Swifts were the Reserves of the Newton Heath LYR club that in 1902 became Manchester United; Ardwick Reserves were the club that in 1894 folded and their Hyde Road ground was taken over by brand new club Manchester City
• The Manchester rugby union club had formed an association side called Manchester FC, and their Reserves also enetered the cup this season
• The cup was dominated again by the Ashton-u-Lyne clubs, with Ashton North End beating Hurst Reserves in the Final

However the officials (referee plus umpires Mr Colvert (Manchester FA secretary)

"not suitable to the committee", so a replay was arranged.
